Train Service in Azerbaijan

There is daily overnight train service between Azerbaijan and Georgian capitals. The train departs from Baku for Tbilisi at approximately 22:00 and scheduled to arrive at around 12:00-13:00 pm next day. The cost is around $50 USD for 1st class ticket and about half for 2nd class ticket. A daily overnight train from Tbilisi to Baku departs usually at 17.00 and arrives to Baku at 8.00 am next morning.

To buy train tickets in Baku, the train station is next to the 28 May metro station. Look for a doorway marked "Kasse" to buy tickets. The trains are behind that area, you have to go around to reach them.

Be prepared to spend a great deal of time at Azerbaijan/Georgia border. You should reach the border at around 10am. Make sure you have your visas arranged in advanced.

At the two-hour stop entering Georgia, taxi drivers mass outside the train offering rides into Tbilisi. Good bargainers can catch a ride for about 35 lari and arrive in the city by 11:00 or earlier instead of at the scheduled 12:00 or 13:00.

Buying tickets: be aware that there is no advance booking or online purchase facilities. Travel agencies won't be able to assist you as well since they started to sell train tickets to international directons only when you produce original passport of the traveler. But generally places are always available, so that should not be your point of concern. They accept cash only!

There is also train service between Russia and Azerbaijan with border point at Yalama. However, bear in mind that this option is only available to citizens of CIS. The land border between Russia and Azerbaijan is closed for citizens of other countries since a long time! The only way to travel between both countries is by air only! If you want to travel from Russia to Azerbaijan or vice versa you have to fly!  It is 100% absolutely completely closed to foreigners.

Trains to/from Sheki

At the Baku train station, you can only buy one way tickets to Sheki. But the ticket booth at the station in Sheki is not open when you arrive in the early morning, so you can't buy a return ticket then... The station in Sheki is a 20 minutes drive away, 5 manat (one way) trip to town. So, you either have to come back out to the station later (and hope ticket booth is open), or arrive early for your train and hope for the best.
Beware: the train from Sheki to Baku now leaves at 21:15 NOT 22:00 !
