For those planning to come to Baku for Eurovision song contest due to be held in Baku in May 2012 hotel booking are not possible at the moment. The Ministry of Culture & Tourism of Azerbaijan put a block no all bookings in May in all Baku hotels. No one knows at the moment what they plan to do - whether to organise a centralised booking system (which is very unlikely to succeed) or smth. else but hundreds of people that were already tried to secure their accommodation were puzzled to hear that no bookings are possible.
Unfortunately there is no information available from the official sources at all, hotels are also desperate to know what to do as hundreds of booking requests has to be turned down. Travel agencies getting booking requests also have to advise tourists to contact them later when situation become more clear.
This was obviously not the well thought decision by the Ministry's officials. Hotels could cope with booking themselves, yes the rates would go up - but this is pure economics. Centralised system without doubt would fail and cause a chaos.
Besides there is still a problems of getting Azeri visas, the system is too complicated and costly, authorisation from Consular Department of Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Letters of Invitations from Azeri travel agencies are hard to get and if they plan to host pan-European event with many foreign tourists coming to Baku their would need to ged rid of Consular Department authorization at leasts.
Another absurd decision from the Ministry of Ecology of Azerbaijan will frustrate a number of foreign visitors coming to Azerbaijan with tourist purposes. They have announced the Mud Volcanoes area a National park and totally banned access to this...
