Mud Volcanoes - no more visits allowed

Another absurd decision from the Ministry of Ecology of Azerbaijan will frustrate a number of foreign visitors coming to Azerbaijan with tourist purposes. They have announced the Mud Volcanoes area a National park and totally banned access to this desert area to everyone. Fines could be imposed (and surely they would be happy to fine if th they can catch anyone) if caught in the area.

The nonsense of this decision can't be explained. The ridiculous thing that they have put a ban on visit in the 'year of tourism', which was announced in 2011. The absurdity of decision to protect these uninhabited and rarely visited areas is that most of the visits are done by genuine foreign tourists (locals have no interest at all in those volcanoes, well you can't make a picnic there in the end - just have a look at the pictures below and you will undesrtand why), so it will mostly affect tourist industry.

The area is unguarded, so personal visits seem feasible, though there is a chance that they migth make checks from time to time. But obviously they can't leave a guard in the middle of nowhere waiting for the unlucky lonely tourist to come to their hands.

There have been a report when guide with a group of tourist visiting the place met there a young guy of 18-20 years who asked a guide for a mobile (the guy had no balance on his mobile to make outgoing calls) to make a call, the guide without any back thought allowed him to make a call which as it turned out was a rat call for a  'fine' team to catch tourists and fine them. Luckily group enjoyed the scenery and had sufficient time to 'escape'.

Well done anyway, they managed to surprise me once again!
