In one the recent newspaper interviews deputy minister of foreign affairs of Azerbaijan Khalaf Khalafov shared his views on tourism potential of Caspian region and future developments in this sphere. According to deputy minster tourism is one of the most dynamically developing sectors in Caspian region and this industry has a huge potential. One can notice not just expensive hotels and luxury yachts but tourist zones for middle class. In the very near future a construction of new tourist zone will start in Boyuk Zyre island in Baku Bay. Around 4 billions of dollars will be invested into construction of 10 hotels, villas, parks and entertainment centres.
Turkmenistan is even far ahed o Azerbaijan in this competition. ‘Avaz’ National tourism zone stretching 16 km along Turkmen coast has already have 5 new hotels that can accommodate more than 1000 guests at the same time. According to development plan another 60 hotels, 4 modern health centres and large sport complexes will be built shortly. As of today the total investments into Turkmen tourism infrastructure on Caspian seashore exceeds $1,5 billions. New airport is being constructed, new highways, power station, sewage and water channels. Second stage of Avaza development envisages the construction of several aqua-parks, yacht clubs, artificial river for small ships and many other constructions.
We also believe that Caspian states should start putting more emphasis from oil to tourism industry. This is Azerbaijan’s long-term strategy. Caspian states have excellent opportunities and promising future. Using modern technologies, bringing foreign investments into the region Caspian states could change their approach to using the riches of Caspian Sea, could make what dozens of generations before us had dreamt of but could not realize because they wasted their time in wars, disputes, combating poverty and ignorance. New potentials could become an incentive for Caspian neighbors to overcome discrepancies and distrust and step together into the future.
