British Council: Azerbaijan tourism industry lacks reception specialists for hotels and restaurants
British Council has conducted a poll of 125 respondents: 59 employers from Azerbaijan hotel industry and the rest are students studying tourism in local universities. The main objective of the poll was to compare what employers really need from new employees and what students actually study.
Most employers noted that it is hard to find reception staff for hotels (37%) and restaurants (34%). Their main requirement is that hotel employees could decently speak foreign language. Average experience of hotel staff in Azerbaijan is 1-2 years (36%) and in restaurants 2-5 years (37%). Most employers confirm, that the staff needs regular trainings and that most hotels organize such trainings at least once every six month.
11% of respondent noted that the main problem in finding a job in local hotel sector is corruption, and that applicant needs to have some sort of relative connection in hotel in order to get some position there. Besides they noted that most employers require now some sort of certificate confirming applicant’s professional qualifications.
The main results of the poll are following:
• Both employers and students agreed that the best way to secure a job in Azerbaijan hotel industry is to use family relations and connections.
• Employers and students believe that the knowledge of foreign language, mainly English and Russian are the most important criteria in selection process by employers from hotel industry.
• Only a small portion of employers emphasized the need for professional background for its staff.
64% of employers expect that within the next 5 years there will be serious changes and more and more professional training for hotel staff will be organized in Azerbaijan
