Azeri artists might be included in 50 Greatest Voices of the world
People’s Artist of Azerbaijan and well known in the world Azeri folklore singer Alim Gasymov was included into the list of one hundred performers compiled by American NPR Radio in order to choose 50 greatest voices. "50 Greatest Voices" series launches in January and lasts -- both on-air and online -- throughout 2010.
You can make your voice heard on this subject, by going to the NPR website between now and Nov. 16 and perusing the list of about 100 finalists. Vote for your favorite five, and they might be included in the "50 Greatest" celebration next year. NPR will spotlight the lives and legacies of these voices through radio pieces on all of its programs, and online at NPR Music.
Alim Gasymov was included along with Freddy Mercury, Luis Armstrong, Barbara Streisand, Elvis Presley and many others. One should not expect pop-stars there since NPR's "great voice" standards are a bit different from those of teenagers. They're looking for the most "iconic, distinct and memorable vocalists," and not just folks who are pleasing to the ear.
