The last year 40% growth in tourism industry won’t be reached this year, according to the Minster of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan Abulfaz Garayev.
"Yes, we see that economic crisis is affecting all the oriental countries and for this reason we won’t be able to reach last year results." – said minister last Thursdays in Baku Information & Tourist Centre.
According to official statistics last year 1,899 million people visited Azerbaijan. Minister told that this year he expects a growth of only 10-12%. Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan has set an objective to increase number of tourists visiting Azerbaijan to 3 million visitors within 5 years.
Nevertheless Garayev does not forecast a serious drop in a number of foreign tourists since there are a number of large scale international events due in 2009 in Azerbaijan. Stable political and economic situation is also plays as a positive factor to attract tourists as well as that Baku was announced the capital of Islamic world for 2009.
